My grandfather had his eyes degenerate like that at about the same age. One eye had to be taken out and was replaced with a glass prosthetic. The other one didn't really take to the surgery so he could see a little bit. Then, about two years ago, they had improved the surgical procedure and he got it done again, and now he can read the paper again for the first time in fifteen years!
